A longtime hotbed
of professional wrestling, the Amarillo scene is celebrated for its rugged and
innovative style. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, mat action was
presented in West Texas by such promoters as Cal Farley, Dory Detton, and Doc
Sarpolis.
But it was the
coming of wrestler-turned-promoter Dory Funk Sr., and his sons Dory Jr. and
Terry, which turned the scene into a mecca and cemented the region's place in
history.
By 1980, however,
attendance was down and the Funk brothers sold their family business to
longtime family friends Dick Murdoch and Bob Windham (Blackjack Mulligan).
Unable to save the circuit, Windham and Murdoch shut down the long-running
promotion. Still, the contributions of the Amarillo circuit continue to
be felt today.
