The
first half of the 20th century saw action in the Peach State presented by such
promoters as Henry Weber, Bill Hartman, Frank Speer, and Nat Jones.
The
second half, however, ushered in such promotional notables as Ray Gunkle, Jim
Barnett, and Paul Jones, who made Georgia Championship Wrestling, Inc. (a
member of the National Wrestling Alliance) a household term throughout the
state via television.
After
Gunkle's death in 1972, his widow Ann started a rival group called the All
South Wrestling Alliance, prompting a bitter two-year wrestling war, with both
groups airing on Ted Turner's television station (later known as TBS).
GCW
won out in the end, and by the late 70's had the highest-rated show on cable
television as Turner's channel went national.
By
1985, GCW sold out to the WWF, prompting former GCW execs Alan "Ole
Anderson" Rogowski and Fred Ward to start a new group called Championship
Wrestling from Georgia, Inc.
Later
that year, NWA member group Jim Crockett Promotions, Inc. pulled off a huge
coup and purchased the exclusive rights to provide programming to TBS. Without
the TBS timeslot, Georgia Championship Wrestling, Inc. had no remaining assets
and was thus dissolved as a corporate entity by the WWF.
Crockett,
based out of Charlotte, North Carolina (and later Dallas, Texas) eventually
sold his wrestling assets to Turner, who set up a new company called World
Championship Wrestling, Inc., based out of Atlanta.
