The way I got hooked up with
the Gulf Coast Wrestling Territory. I was wrestling and refereeing in
North Bay, Canada and the season was just about over, the territory
would close during the winter. Terry and Ronnie Garvin along with Doug
Kinslow had wrestled in Mobile and suggested for me to try and get in
there. Terry Garvin called the office in Mobile and got Lee Fields on
the phone. Terry and Doug both talked to Lee before giving me the phone.
Lee told me he had a job for someone to put out window cards, put up
rings, sweep floors, carry out garbage, referee and wrestle when he
needed me to. I said ok. He said if I could handle that, when would I
want to start? I told him I could be in Mobile after my last shot in
North Bay. Lee said he’d see me then.
I went to Mobile without calling ahead. I was starting on a Monday so I got down there on a Saturday night, went out Sunday and found the Fields Bros. Ranch in Loxley, Al. I meet Don Fields, I don't think he expected to see what he saw. I was driving a Ford station wagon with my wife, four kids and everything we owned in it. Don asked me if I had called the office before coming in. I said I didn't. He said they didn't know how to call me, but I was booked in Morgan City La. Monday night. I left for Morgan City the next day and did not give myself enough time so I was running late. I was nervous already because I didn't know who I was booked with, or anyone, as far as that goes. I was thinking they would probably fire me before I got started. I didn't get there until almost 9:00pm and was scared to death. When I got in the dressing room I meet Bill Golden the booker. I didn't know any of the boys that were there, but they started introducing themselves to me and nobody said anything about me being late so I started feeling more relaxed. Then lo and behold, Terry and Ronnie Garvin walked in the room. Boy was I ever glad to see them. Lee had given them the same starting date as me. They wanted to surprise me so they didn't tell me. I asked Bill Golden when I was on, he said the Main Event. I couldn't believe it, I was so excited, I was a substitute partner with Ken Cooper against Jack and Jim "The Dirty Daltons" I will never forget that match. That is how I got started in the Gulf Coast. Next time, I will tell you some things that happened later on in my career. Visit Bob Kelly's website here.
