I stayed
on the Mobile side until school was just about out. I was working out
with Charlie Carr but wasn't getting anywhere. Rocky McQuire who
was running things for Lee was not going to help me and that was plain
to see. So I talked to my wife Chris and told her when the kids got out
of school we were going back home.
I went to the office to turn in my notice. Don Fields was there and heard me telling Rocky. Don followed me out to my car and asked me come have a cup of coffee with him. We went just around the corner to the Princess House Restaurant. He told me that Lee was supposed to be in from Louisiana Saturday night and would be out at the ranch Sunday and I should come out and bring the wife and kids, eat dinner with them and talk to Lee before leaving. We went to the ranch and did we ever have a good time. I talked to Lee and told him I was not happy with the way Rocky was treating me and was going back home as soon as school was out. Lee said he wanted me to come to Louisiana when school was out for awhile, before making up my mind to leave. I told him I would. We spent to next two Sundays at the ranch and the last Sunday Lee told me he found me a furnished house in Lafayette,La. if I wanted it. I told him I would take it, and when did he want me over there and when could I get the house. He said the house is vacant you can come as soon as you want. School was going to be out Friday I asked him if they would hold it till Saturday. He said not to worry he would have the key and take me to it if I could get to Lafayette by 1 o'clock Saturday afternoon. I told him I would see him in Lafayette. This move was the best one I ever made. When I got to Lafayette Lee took us to the house we got moved in and I was booked that night and every night after that. Bill Golden was running things for Lee in Lafayette. I was under his feet all the time. I started opening the office and running things for Bill. In late 1966, Lee let Bill go and gave me the book. So I started booking and calling the shots on the Louisiana side. Lee and Bobby Fields were on top as U.S. tag team champions. I was still booking myself as a referee but wrestling a little more. Next month, I'll tell you what happened when Lee Fields decided to get out of the ring. Visit Bob Kelly's website here. |
