In the
early part of 1967 Lee Fields retired from the ring. We were on our way
to Loronger La. and he asked me who I thought would make a good partner
for his brother Bobby. I named off a few of the boys and Lee said what
about you. Man you could have knocked me over with a feather.
I said Lee don't be kidding around with me. Lee said I'm not ribbing you, we talked it over and if you want to do it, it's all yours. I could hardly talk I was so excited. I said, just tell me what to do. I was refereeing on TV and got into a hassle with Jack Dalton he beat me up and threw me out of the ring. I keep going back in, he keep throwing me out. Lee came out and pulled me out of the ring. The announcer came over so the people could hear what Lee was telling me. He told the people he was going to teach me to be able to compete with the likes of The Daltons. I started working out with Lee almost every day and he would go to the ring with me during my matches. We had a ring up in the Lafayette Sports Arena all the time and when people found out we were working out they would come in and watch. The wrestling fans really got into it. They could see my progress as I was getting stiffer competition and finally winning matches. When Lee said I was ready for the Daltons, the people was ready and so was I. Lee made a deal on TV with Jack Dalton for me to wrestle Frank and Lee put up $500.00 against Jacks gun and holster. I won the gun and holster and still have it to this day. That brought me and Jack into the ring and after about eight weeks Lee and Frank were barred from ringside and I won my first championship, the Louisiana State Title. Frank made it to the ring after the match was over and they both jumped me but instead of Lee coming to the ring to help me it was Bobby. That put us together, Bobby Fields and I we went on to win the U.S. Tag team belts from the Daltons. More about my journey toward the Gulf Coast Championship next month.
