TV was coming up on Saturday. and it was either a Thursday or Friday night before the tapings that he had to test out his magic gimmick. It included escaping from a pair of handcuffs. Well a lot can be said for guys in the business: we can hang with lots of roles, pro wrestlers, referees, managers, bookers, promoters, etc. But one thing we aren't, and that's a true magician. Yes, some of the things we do these days are magical, or so it would seem, but here comes the funny part.
Worker A decides that he is going to try his gimmick out and try to escape from these handcuffs. The only problem is he was in his underwear; had a bit too much to drink and had handcuffed his hands behind his back. And don't ask me how, but some how he had locked himself out of his room. So picture a wrestler, with his hands handcuffed behind his back, in his underwear, outside of his room with no room key and the key to the handcuffs inside the room. And that's not even the funniest part.
The funniest part is he had to get another room key and he was VERY aggravated that he had no identification whatsoever on him (remember, he was in his underwear) and he would have to make a trip down to the front desk. So away he goes, down the hall, into the elevator, cussing, yelling, and ranting up a storm as he stumbles through the lobby (which happened to be full of business travelers checking in and out) and yells at the top of his lungs, "I WANT MY !%%@$$!@% ROOM KEY NOW!!!". Needless to say, that didn't go over too well with the front desk.
It was literally two days after that little incident when all the USWA guys got notices under their door saying that our $15 a night room deal would no longer be honored and we were welcome to stay but it would be at a regular rate.
Wow, is it funny now to think back on that little incident but I know it wasn't funny at the time. Worker A had some heat with the boys but we all eventually got over it.
I guess the moral of the story is, don't sweat the small stuff, don't even sweat the big stuff, time will eventually make everything better.
OK, that is my USWA memory for this month. Next month I'm going to tell you about my first pile driver (another funny story) and how some of our house shows ran. Until then, keep watching wrestling <insert shameless plug for NWA Wildside here ;-) > and I'll see ya next month!
