Rocky
Johnson was Lia Maivia’s son-in-law, and one of the
corporate officers of Polynesian Pro Wrestling. Many remember him as being one of WWF’s tag team champions
along with, his partner, Tony Atlas.
While still working for Vince McMahon, Jr.,
Rocky, and his brother, Ricky, would work our television
tapings and matches at the Neil Blaisdell Center, in
Honolulu. For
those who do not know, Rocky, and his wife, Atta, are
the parents of Dwayne Johnson, known worldwide at The
Rock. One of our trainees, Clint Terill, claims Rocky loved poking fun at people. I did not witness that aspect of him. Once, when he, and Ritchie Magnett, came back from the gym, Rocky was laughing about a trick he had pulled on Ritchie. Bodybuilders use Niacin, to cut and define muscles. It makes your body flush, by opening up the blood vessels, causing a persons skin to take on a rosy glow, making them feel that their skin is burning. It also lowers the bad cholesterol level and raises the good cholesterol level, and is used to treat heart disease. Anyway, Ritchie took the vitamin, not knowing of its effects. In his words, “I thought I was burning up!” We all got a good laugh about that. During one of our office meetings, with Lia, Lars, Rocky, Atta, and me, Rocky asked me a question. I replied, using the “F” word. All of a sudden, he gave me a mean look and told me not to use that type of language around his wife, and to apologize to her. Lia, Lars, Atta and I looked at each other, with shock. The “F” word had always been freely used, by all, around the office. Not wanting to get him any more upset, I apologized and the meeting continued. Channel 13 had been airing our Blaisdell shows, also Channel 26, I think. I believe we did the television matches at Channel 13, too, but I am not too sure. Memory fades, as I get older. Rocky used to wear a baseball cap, with some kind of “crylic” writing on the front. I never paid much attention to it, until I got to the office one day and Lia told me that Rocky’s hat got our show kicked off 13’s lineup. She said that some people saw the writing, and turned their heads, at different angles, until they could read it, then phoned in complaints. The network found out the writing said, “F*** YOUR SELF”. Lia was very mad at Rocky, and voiced her opinion many times, that day. We eventually were able to calm the network executives down, and they returned us to their lineup. Just before I left Honolulu, in August 1996, Lia saw me at the Ala Moana Center. Almost in tears, she told me that Rocky and Jimmy Snuka were booking matches, out of Aiea (up by North Shore). She wanted to know why they were competing against her. I told her I did not know, and went home.
